Helmy › Handover checklist

The yacht handover checklist

17 sections, 146 checks. Written by a working captain for the day a boat changes hands - a new owner, a new skipper, the start or the end of a season - and published here in full, because every captain has re-typed this list and hated it.

Download the PDF A4, print it and write on it. No account, no email.

The 45 marked in gold below are facts about the boat rather than observations on the day - a model, a serial, an hours reading, whether a certificate is in date. Those live in her record, and a handover should not ask anybody to type them twice.

Or let the boat fill in 45 of them

Helmy keeps a vessel's documents, equipment, service history and certificates in one place - in her own Google Drive, not ours. Set that up once and the handover reads it: every model, serial and hours figure is already there, every certificate in date is already ticked, and what is left is the 101 things somebody genuinely has to go and look at.

  1. Add the boat - about a minute, no card.
  2. Her manuals come from the shared library in one tap; her certificates take a line each.
  3. Run the handover. Both parties sign it, and the PDF is filed in her Drive.

Run this checklist on my boat

Helmy Free covers one boat with usage limits. Helmy Pro is unlimited for €5 per vessel a month. The checklist above is free either way, and so is the PDF.

Is the handover checklist really free?
Yes. The page is free to read and the PDF is free to download, with no account and no email address. It is the same checklist the Helmy app runs, published in full.
Can I change it for my boat?
Print the PDF and write on it, or run it inside Helmy, where you can add your own items, attach photos to any check, and have both parties sign the finished record.
What does Helmy actually fill in?
45 of the 146 checks answer themselves from the vessel's own record once she is set up: 22 from documents already in her library, 18 from her machinery and service record, 5 from her certificates. The rest are things somebody has to look at on the day, and no software can do those for you.
